Why I Don’t Care About My Facebook Reach Today

I run a social media marketing company called Schmooz Media. Schmooz focuses on creating meaningful, actionable social media strategies and activities for small business owners. I started Schmooz a year and a half ago, and in this time, my company has grown to a team of 15 people, 14 of whom are freelancers, 1 full-time employee, and of course, myself.

When I tell people about Schmooz, there are many things that people are either curious about or critical of. The most common questions I hear are:

Why don’t you just hire 5 full time people instead of 14 freelancers? Doesn’t managing that size team make your life more difficult?

Why do you work from home? When are you going to get an office?

Have you gotten funding? Are you going to pitch to investors?

These are all valid questions.

Most criticism comes from other business owners and clients, who say:

If you’re a social media marketing company, why don’t you have a better social media presence?

When I hear this question, I momentarily second guess myself. Then I remember that I have made strategic choices about how I run my business.

Right now, at the stage my business is in, spending the time and money on this endeavor doesn’t make sense. Here’s why:

1.  Most of my clients come to me because of referrals, which means they have seen the work that Schmooz Media has done for an already existing client. This means that my clients often don’t feel the need to look at any other online portfolio.

2. Small Businesses are just that – small. As a founder, I do my best to spend any money I have for the business to put back into the business. For now, that means hiring the best team I can in order to practice using new technologies and improve on systems management… for my clients.

3. When I do put effort into Schmooz Social Media, I get great results. In fact, the results are often too good – meaning the phone starts ringing and I’m swamped for weeks (great problem, right?).

So while everyone is busy working on making their website or social  media presence more impressive, I’m going to be sitting here, putting my nose to the ground, focusing on client work. What has been working harder for Schmooz than a large social media following is our white papers and a testimonial brochure that outlines the amazing results we’ve gotten and experiences of our clients. It’s not always sexy, but I know my stuff.

My money will go into systems that will give my clients clearer guidelines and better work. My time will go into talking to clients that extra 5 minutes a day. My energy will go into giving people the tools they need to feel in control of their own small business. My efforts will go into treating my clients with the upmost respect to their goals and their budgets – because I know how precious even $300/month is.

It might not be sexy and it might not be the fastest way to the top, but how I run my business is working. It’s sustainable, scalable, and gives me time in my schedule to learn and even to relax

..and just like most of my clients, as my business grows, I’ll end up spending more money on Social Media.

And when that time comes, I’ll know just what to do.
