Goal Setting Tips for Success

Every entrepreneur knows that the secret (not-so secret!) to success is goal setting. You may have an idea of where you want your company to be, but getting there takes planning and dedication. It can be to lose focus when dealing with regular day-to-day operations, but if you want your business to grow, it’s important to continue working towards the end goal.

Even in a sea of emails, meetings, and admin work, it can be done – it just may seem a bit overwhelming at first. So here are some tips on how to get started and regain your focus:


Take time to see where you want your company to be. Really reach for the sky, as if nothing was off limits – and write it down. Look at the list as a set of goals that you want to achieve, and try to envision the steps it would take to get there. Ask yourself questions as if you were taking the next steps tomorrow. Would you be happy? Are these goals attainable? Would you need someone’s help achieving these goals? Take notes – this is the foundation of your plan.


Now that you have your ultimate vision scrawled out for your company, break down each goal into something smaller. Then, make those goals slightly smaller. Keep doing this until you have different steps – the smallest one you can begin ASAP – which will contribute to a larger goal. Write realistic deadlines for each goal, so that you have a measurable unit of achievement.


Now that you have your goals set, start incorporating them into your daily activities. Make sure that you are doing something each day that works towards the ultimate goal of your business. It can be something small (like researching potential clients) that will lead to a bigger action and that will continue to grow until your goal is achieved.


Once you reach the first deadline for your goals, take a moment to reflect on what you have done so far. Did you meet your goal? What worked for you during that time? Decide if adjustments need to be made and apply them to the next phase of your goal setting. Then rinse and repeat for your next deadline.
